Conscious Journeys is the unique volun-tourism and educational program of the Tibetan Village Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting sustainable tourism and economic empowerment on the Tibetan Plateau. Led by Tamdin Wangdu, a native Tibetan and the founder of TVP, our socially responsible Tibetan team has the experience and knowledge to operate this unique program. Our service program primarily functions in remote villages where we have projects in Kham and Amdo – regions currently known as Sichuan, Qinghai and Yunnan Provinces. However, we organize cultural and spiritual journeys to unique and sacred places in Central Tibet (TAR) where some of our guides and staff grew up.

The aardehuizen in Olst were inspired by Earthships of architect Michael Reynolds. The first Earthships date back to the ‘70s and have been tested thoroughly by use. Discarded materials and local building materials determine the buildings. An earthship is designed for off-grid living.
12 of the buildings have tire walls - filled with rammed earth - supporting the roof. The other 11 buildings are built with straw walls with a wood frame supporting the roof. The roofs are slanted 9º to catch a maximum of sun in winter and very little sun in summer.
They have guided tours to show you around the project. The project is not accessible for cars. The green paths are generally somewhat muddy - especially after periods of rain. Walking boots are advised!
